A Castle With a Scottish Flag

A customer asked me to make a 50th birthday card for her husband's upcoming big day. She wanted me to show him on the card, along with several things that are important to him. The list included whisky, a castle with a Scottish flag, a red Tesla, Dungeons & Dragons and a sword. She requested an extra large card, so there was plenty of room for her long list!
I showed her bespectacled husband in the centre of the card. He is holding a glass of whisky. On his right is a castle flying the blue and white flag of Scotland. Below the castle is a bottle of whisky. I added a gold coloured 50 to mark his age.
On his left I cut out a bright red Tesla. I added the charger to show that it is an electric car. Below the card is a sword. Finally, I carefully cut out the scarlet-red logo of Dungeons & Dragons - two letters "D" connected by an ampersand resembling a silhouette of a dragon. Dungeons & Dragons is a fantasy role-playing game that was first published in 1974.
My customer loves the colour purple, which I even included on her silver wedding anniversary card back in 2020. She requested that I use the colour once again.
Her husband loved the card!

Hana & Gary

Hana was turning 40 so her husband wrote and asked me to make a special card for her. She is a hairdresser and a teacher, he told me. She loves going to the gym, her iPhone, Instagram and jewellery. There was a lot to include but this was an extra large card, so I had plenty of room.
I showed blonde-haired Hana with her hairdryer in one hand and a dumbbell in the other. I added some running shoes as well, since running and weights are her favourite ways to exercise. Behind her is a blackboard with the words "English Lesson" chalked on it. In the foreground I added Hana's iPhone 12, some hairdressing scissors and a comb, the Instagram logo and some sparkly jewellery. Her husband wasn't sure what her favourite piece of jewellery is but said that he had just given her a gold necklace, so I made sure to add that. A big silver 40 marks Hana's age.
A few months before Hana turned 40, her husband Gary celebrated his special birthday. Hana also asked me to make him two very special cards. The first card, an extra large one, was going to be from their children. Hana asked me to show her husband with their five kids. He is a big Everton F.C. fan so I included the club's crest on the card. He is wearing a royal blue shirt, Everton's traditional home colour. Hana also told me that he enjoys playing golf and lifting weights and I had to include his iPhone and the TV remote too!
The card from Hana showed Gary enjoying a tumbler of whisky and smoking a cigar. To his right is a big 40, his Tesla electric car and some weights. On Gary's left I showed the logo of his accountancy firm along with some tiny coins. A bottle of whisky and some more cigars completed the design.
After asking Gary a few questions about Hana's card, he replied saying "Now I understand why my wife likes your work. She also likes detail!". They certainly got it in tenfold on all three cards!

17, 18 and 22

Emily was turning 17. Her mum asked me to make her a birthday card with a beach theme but also told me that Emily had been studying hard and suggested that I maybe add some books as well.
I have shown Emily holding up a big number 17. Behind her you can see a beautiful blue sea and some gorgeous golden sand. The sun is shining brightly and a couple of seagulls are flying high in the sky. Next to Emily there is an open book. I wonder if she would really be tempted to use it at the beach? 😉
Emily loved the card.
Yonatan was turning 18 and his mum asked me to make him a card as well. He rides his dad's motorbike, so she wanted me to show him holding a motorbike helmet. I was also asked to include dad's car, which Yonatan drives as well. Finally, mum sent me a copy of the invitation to Yonatan's theatre studies final show. He has just completed his te'udat bagrut (Israel's high school matriculation examination) and finished high school.
I showed Yonatan with the grey helmet tucked under his arm. Dad's white Alfa Romeo Giulietta is behind him, along with the invitation to his theatre studies show. Finally, I added a football next to Yonatan because I know he is a keen supporter. A big number 18 marks his age.
Mum wrote "I love it!".
Rebecca was turning 22 and this time it was her auntie who asked me to make a card. The theme should be charity shops, she said. She loves buying clothes and looking around the shops as a pastime. Her auntie sent me photos of the specific shops that she likes to visit and asked if I could somehow include them on the card.
I cut out a fiddly little clothes rack and added some clothes hanging from it. In front of the rack are some boxes of clothes, with a pair of shoes next to them. Photos of the various shops Rebecca likes to visit surround the rack. A big pink 22 marks her age.
Rebecca's mum wrote on Facebook, "Lisa I loved the card. Thank you".
