Hair and Makeup

I have been making birthday cards for Eden for a number of years and makeup has been the theme for many of them. This year was no different. Eden's mum asked me to make her daughter a card based on things to do with the makeup and hair course she is currently taking.
Eden's mum told me that she has been working on a dolls head for hair styling. (Who remembers the Girl's World styling head of the 1970s?). She sent me various photos of the doll, which has been named Patricia! Apparently Eden was most pleased with the wavy hairstyle she had created in one photo, so I tried to replicate it on her card.
Eden is learning about makeup as well as hair, though I think she is already super talented in that department. Check out her Instagram page to see some of her amazing creations. I added some bits of makeup - a couple of teeny tiny palettes, lipsticks and a brush - along with a picture of Eden doing Patricia's hair.
Eden loved the card.

Hana & Gary

Hana was turning 40 so her husband wrote and asked me to make a special card for her. She is a hairdresser and a teacher, he told me. She loves going to the gym, her iPhone, Instagram and jewellery. There was a lot to include but this was an extra large card, so I had plenty of room.
I showed blonde-haired Hana with her hairdryer in one hand and a dumbbell in the other. I added some running shoes as well, since running and weights are her favourite ways to exercise. Behind her is a blackboard with the words "English Lesson" chalked on it. In the foreground I added Hana's iPhone 12, some hairdressing scissors and a comb, the Instagram logo and some sparkly jewellery. Her husband wasn't sure what her favourite piece of jewellery is but said that he had just given her a gold necklace, so I made sure to add that. A big silver 40 marks Hana's age.
A few months before Hana turned 40, her husband Gary celebrated his special birthday. Hana also asked me to make him two very special cards. The first card, an extra large one, was going to be from their children. Hana asked me to show her husband with their five kids. He is a big Everton F.C. fan so I included the club's crest on the card. He is wearing a royal blue shirt, Everton's traditional home colour. Hana also told me that he enjoys playing golf and lifting weights and I had to include his iPhone and the TV remote too!
The card from Hana showed Gary enjoying a tumbler of whisky and smoking a cigar. To his right is a big 40, his Tesla electric car and some weights. On Gary's left I showed the logo of his accountancy firm along with some tiny coins. A bottle of whisky and some more cigars completed the design.
After asking Gary a few questions about Hana's card, he replied saying "Now I understand why my wife likes your work. She also likes detail!". They certainly got it in tenfold on all three cards!

A Memorable Day for Three Generations

Lisa is an art teacher. Her husband asked me to make a special card for her birthday, simply suggesting that I create something "arty". My favourite type of commission! I decided to show red-headed Lisa proudly holding up some of her students work (I found a photo on Facebook). She has a paintbrush in her other hand, whilst a palette, paint tubes, splashes of paints and coloured pencils surround her.
Around the same time, Lisa herself asked me to make a couple of cards. This first one was for the couple's daughter, their third child, who recently joined the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF). I have shown her in her olive green uniform with her beautiful red hair flowing over her shoulders (in reality, female soldiers with hair that descends past the collar of the uniform shirt must have their hair in a ponytail). I learnt from my earlier mistake and showed her saluting with her right hand! I added some black army boots, an Israeli flag and the Israel Defence Forces emblem. The sword in the emblem represents war, while the olive branch symbolises the yearning for peace.
B'hatzlacha Keren! Good luck.
Finally, the other request was a birthday card for Lisa's dad who celebrated his 83rd birthday back in December. She sent me some photos of her dad and told me that he is passionate about Leyton Orient F.C., a professional football club based in Leyton, London. He loves Neil Sedaka, writes poems, was a ladies hairdresser back in England and his favourite meal is fried egg and chips.
I have shown dad holding a pair of hairdressing scissors in one hand and a plate of egg and chips in the other. Behind him is a picture of Neil Sedaka, the badge of his favourite football team and a sheet of paper and pencil in readiness for a poem. The big number 83 marks his age.
"Thanks for the cards - they're perfect" Lisa wrote to me.
